The hot, nasty, and sweaty production that was 2012's Into the Woods in Central Park made way for this special Josh Swallows Broadway reunion episode as Josh hosts his former cast mates Jessie Mueller, Chip Zien, Sarah Stiles, and Gideon Glick.
Apparently New York smells like tears before bedtime. At least that's what Josh thinks with this episode's guest, Rachel Bay Jones. She has played the roles of Catherine in the 2013 Broadway revival of Pippin and Evan Hansen's mother, Heidi Hansen, in Dear Evan Hansen. The latter earned her the 2017 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. Other Broadway credits include Meet Me in St. Louis, Hair, and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.
Josh has known Jay Armstrong Johnson since they were in high school -- Jay is currently starring Raoul in as in Phantom. In 2001, he made his debut at the theater in a production of the musical Peter Pan. After joining the American tour of A Chorus Line in the role of Mark, he debuted on Broadway in 2009 in the musical Hair (with Josh, duh) as a member of the ensemble and the first substitute for Gavin Creel in the role of Claude. In 2010, he played the protagonist Jack Kelly in one of the first readings of the musical Newsies.
Taking the title role in Hello Dolly! in the national tour, this 3-time Tony nominated actress made her Broadway debut in City of Angels, before moving on to roles in Falsettos, 1776, Parade, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Parade, Kiss Me, Kate, Unrinetown, Mamma Mia!, Lestat, The Addams Family, Sister Act, Scandalous, Finding Neverland, and Tuck Everlasting. She grew up in Albany, moved to New York for fun, and is still waiting fo figure out how to make money from acting on Broadway.
Lisa Lampanelli is a former stand-up comedian, actress and insult comic. Much of her material is racy… and this episode with Josh is no different. With a career that spanned more than 30 years, Lisa Lampanelli was a constant on the comedy scene. With numerous tours, Grammy nominations, and national TV guest appearances and specials under her belt, Lisa made headlines in 2012 when she lost more than 100 pounds with the help of bariatric surgery. The comedian went on to speak with unflinching honesty about her lifelong food and body-image issues, and has since gone from insulter to inspirer. She announced her retirement from stand-up comedy on the Howard Stern radio program in late 2018 and is now dedicating her life to running transformational food and body-image workshops, performing in issue-oriented storytelling shows, and completing a rigorous life-coaching certification program.
